Calling all knitting readers.

I'm toying with knitting a shawl or wrap for the big "w" in August in case the day turns chilly (it is in NH after all) Can anyone toss a pattern idea my way that covers the following:

  • not make me want to poke my eye out
  • be fun but, no charts, please
  • be lightweight, but not mohair (refer to first bullet)

I've been thinking about the Clapotis, but if so, will be seeking yarn suggestions as well. Something light in colour and I'm not against a little bead/sparkle.

Thank you!

  1. The clap definitely won't make you poke your eyes out, and I highly recommend it. If anything, you'll be a little bored by the end.

As for yarn, I'll recommend Kraemer Sterling. They have it at my LYS here. It's laceweight (I'd double it for a Clap), and it has real silver woven into it. The result is not "bling" but subtle and sophisticated sparkle. There is a white and/or cream color that I think would be totally lovely as a w-word shawl.

If you decide to go this route, and can't find it locally and/or online, let me know and I can send it to you.

  2. Hi there. (Fellow Raveler and DC-er.) I have always admired this pattern from knitty, but I don't think it would work for every dress:

I actually own a scarf from H&M that everyone in various DC-area LYS's thinks is a Clapotis, but it's got a few wrinkles--k1p1k1p1, dropped stitch, repeat, with a clever, simple crocheted edging. I've gotten a lot of compliments on it from people at work and so forth. The length and the lightness and the sparkle really make it elegant:http://flickr.com/photos/96866877@N00/2296898441/

The yarn that janet recommends actually sounds perfect--the little sparkle to it, which sadly you cannot tell from the picture, is very key.

Good luck! Remembering my own attempt to knit while a wedding was gathering/storming/blowing over, mindless is what you want and all you can take. :)
